Biopharmaceutical R&D clarification, filtration and separation of solutions at small volume prior to various purification procedures often is not difficult. Centrifugation or a simple buchner vacuum filter is often all that is required. Difficulties, however; may arise when the development stage proceeds to a larger bench scale and /or pilot production volume. Suddenly it is obvious the buchner funnel is too slow and labor intensive, it will be impossible to handle the much larger volumes now required. Centrifugation on large scale can be very expensive, often with an unacceptable loss of product. Difficult, large volume process solutions, even those with high solids contamination, can now be economically processed. Every application is unique and may require a different method or combinations of methods for clarification, concentration, diafiltration, and final purification.
